The Committee on Students with Disabilities (CSD) is very pleased that Martha Smith, MA, Project Coordinator, from the Oregon Health Sciences University has agreed to return to DMS to provide a specialized training session on "Teaching Medical Students with Disabilities." She is a very dynamic speaker who did an excellent program for the CSD last fall.

This training is being provided to faculty at DMS since nearly every class now has several students with various types of disabilities. Please contact Susan Lynaugh, DMS Student Disabilities Coordinator, to let her know if you would like to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

Dartmouth Medical School is excited about the opportunity to participate in the Health Sciences Students with Disabilities: Faculty Education Project. The U.S. Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Education funds this Project.

The goal of the Project is to enhance the knowledge of health science education faculties to teach and accommodate students with disabilities and, in turn, increase the success of these students.Through the Project, faculty will be provided with the opportunity to attend training programs and to access a Web Page that provides information about the unique issues faced by students and faculty in health science programs. The Oregon Health Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon is conducting the Project. The Dartmouth Medical School is collaborating with OHSU on this important effort.Susan Lynaugh, of the Office for Student Affairs, is the Dartmouth Liaison on this project.

Project Update:

In March, Martha Smith, OHSU-based project coordinator, spent time at Dartmouth Medical School working with Susan Lynaugh. Using curriculum that is being developed for health science faculty by project staff, Martha prepared Susan to train other faculty members on campus. Susan will be training Clerkship Directors in August, using Martha's "Day In the Life..." curriculum. This curriculum takes the faculty through a student's typical day using a problem-solving approach. She will also be presenting with other project staff at the Association of Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD), in Portland, Oregon the third week in July.

Videos of health science professionals, including those featured in the Profile Gallery, are now available for loan. Contact Susan Lynaugh for more information.
