Many
exciting things have happened since Portland Community
College staff and faculty partnered with the Health
Science Faculty Education Project last year. Martha
Smith, coordinator of the project, and Clark Hochstetler,
Faculty Chair of PCC Offices
for Students with Disabilities have worked
extensively with the faculty of the health sciences
programs to provide technical assistance and training.
Two members of the Office for Students with Disabilities
and three health science program faculty went through
Program Accommodation Liaison Training to learn more
about how the special issues of the health sciences
field affects diversity and success in the classroom
and clinical settings at PCC. This training became
the seed that created a team that meets regularly
to problem solve and support each other and students
to be successful in the health science programs.
Martha and Clark also meet individually with team
members to provide technical assistance for specific
issues that each member might encounter in his/her
specific role.
Members
of the health science faculty are encouraged to request
additional training and technical assistance from their
PAL or the Office for Students with Disabilities.
Project
Update
In April,
the Portland Community College PALS and the Office for
Students with Disabilities staff conducted two trainings
on technology for health science educators at PCC -
Sylvania and PCC-Cascade. Thirty-five faculty from the
Nursing Program, Dental Programs, and Allied Health
Programs participated in 2-hour trainings that focused
on technology used by students enrolled in health science
programs as well as technology that could be used in
classrooms and other presentations.
The 2-hour
training provided small group exposure to a wide variety
of assistive technologies including: Palm technology
applications, assistive computer technologies for reading
and writing support, speech-to- text technology, magnification
and camera technology, and technology that assists individuals
with physical tasks. Participants gained insight into
special technologies used by health science students
who experience disabilities. Using their experience
from previous trainings faculty explored and imagined
new applications for the featured technologies that
could be used for instruction and in clinical activities
by all health science students and instructors. Participants
were able to explore and experiment with the various
technologies under the guidance of technology specialists.
