The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is excited about the opportunity to participate in the Health Sciences Students with Disabilities: Faculty Education Project. The U.S. Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Education funds this Project.

The goal of the Project is to enhance the knowledge of health science education faculties to teach and accommodate students with disabilities and, in turn, increase the success of these students.Through the Project, faculty will be provided with the opportunity to attend training programs and to access a Web Page that provides information about the unique issues faced by students and faculty in health science programs. The Oregon Health Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon is conducting the Project. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is collaborating with OHSU on this important effort. Kathy Gibbs, Director, Student Academic Support Services (SASS), is the UTHSC liaison.

Project Update:

Kathy Gibbs will be training the faculty of Dental Hygiene Program in July, using Martha Smith's "Day In the Life..." curriculum. This curriculum takes the faculty through a student's typical day using a problem-solving approach. She will also be presenting with other project staff at the Association of Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD), in Portland, Oregon the third week in July.

In August, the Student Academic Support Services will be having an open house to demonstrate new equipment and technology that is now available. Voice output computer software and scanning equipment for use by visually impaired students will be available.

Videos of health science professionals, including those featured in the Profile Gallery, are now available for loan in the SASS office.
